We've been considering this for a while, but as usual we've been procrastinating for a long time and argued about details. However, we finally pulled it together and this post is to announce to all of you friends the official creation of the Cuckoo Foundation !

The Cuckoo Foundation is a legally incorporated entity in the Netherlands and it's dedicated to foster the development of Cuckoo Sandbox and other open source tools and to support their development logistically, legally and financially.

Why?

In simple words, we're just trying to do things right. Cuckoo has been growing exponentially in the last couple of years and we can now count on a large and devoted userbase and an increasingly active developer community. The step of creating a formal entity to back up its development is a natural step to guarantee continuity to the project and walk it to maturity.

What does it change?

Not much, really. Cuckoo Foundation is a non-profit and Cuckoo Sandbox will always remain available open source in its entirety. What you can expect is a more structured development process and possibly more initiatives to support and unify the community in exchange for just a little bit of paperwork.

Contributors deciding to integrate substantial code into the project, will have to sign a simple agreement that takes care of copyright assignment and licensing. You can find the documents and additional details on our official page.

We're excited for this new milestone and we're looking forward to what the future reserves to this project as we all get more committed to it. Thanks to the whole community for supporting the project for so long and for inspiring its development after almost three years of existence!

Enjoy.
